The "Roots" of Jeet Kune Do
According to Bruce Lee, the "roots of JKD" are "on-guard positioning, footwork and movement, and postures in relaying force." These are the elements Bruce Lee deemed the MOST important to JKD. They are fundamental. And they are what this course covers.
On-Guard Positioning
"Good form is the most efficient manner to accomplish the purpose of a performance with a minimum of lost motion and wasted energy. Always train in good form."--Bruce Lee
Footwork and Movement
"Footwork can beat any attack, and a properly maintained distance will baffle any skilled opponent."--Bruce Lee
Postures in Relaying Force
"Not just arm power--strike with correct timing of foot, waist, hip, shoulder, and wrist motion."--Bruce Lee
About the course
Of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee famously wrote, "Only one in 10,000 can handle it. It is silly to think almost anyone can learn it." Which is why, despite the fact that Bruce Lee called the straight punch "the core of Jeet Kune Do," many instructors only have the most surface-level understanding of it. In 2005, Teri Tom's The Straight Lead: The Core of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do offered an alternative deep, deep dive into understanding the foundations of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do. Since then, it has revolutionized the way JKD has been taught, offering new insight into its historical context, influences, development, biomechanical principles, technical execution, and strategic elements. According to Bruce Lee, the core elements, the "roots of JKD" are 1) On-guard positioning 2) Footwork and movement and 3) Postures in Relaying Force. These are explained in great detail in the book The Straight Lead, and they are also addressed in this online course. There are limitations to conveying motion and postures in print, so now, for the first time, there is a video companion to the book. This online course will greatly enhance your understanding of The Straight Lead with technical explanations and demonstrations directly from the source, the author of The Straight Lead. Teri Tom's JFJKD lineage traces directly to Bruce Lee via Ted Wong, who spent more time in private study (over 122 sessions) with Bruce Lee than any other individual. Wong was also one of Lee's closest friends and is considered to have been Lee's most loyal student, teaching only the purist, most unadulterated form of JKJKD. Teri Tom was Ted Wong's private student for over a decade, spending over 1,000 hours in private JFJKD study with him. A Note from Your Instructor I have addressed this before ad nauseam in my books, but for you newbies out there, you will notice that there are not a gajillion techniques in this course. It does not run for hours. Instead, there are fundamentals that you need to understand in appropriate depth. If you do not have this foundation, you are not practicing Jeet Kune Do. Period. But with a 3-minute lesson, there is much to unlock. Much of that will be through your own self-exploration. Once you have watched a reference video, do not be satisfied with just a surface understanding of it. From our Founder himself: "Real knowledge breeds 'body feel.' Surface knowledge breeds mechanical conditioning." So when you watch the video, don't just go through the motions when you try it yourself. Play with it. Watch it again. Watch yourself in the mirror. Experiment. Get to know the technique. Wear it in. That's only something you can do–I can't do it for you–but having a video reference now, as well as some commentary with nuanced pointers, should help tremendously. Why have so many JKD "instructors" glossed over these details in the past? Because to the masses and the untrained eye, it's not sexy, is it? It takes a lot of determination to dig into the details and know a thing inside and out. Ted Wong always said, "If it were easy, everyone would be doing it." A lot of people can't see the value in the details, but tell that to Jack Dempsey, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Manny Pacquiao, Triple G, and Vasiliy Lomachenko. If you train straight punching and footwork with precision, it will pay off. Be like Bruce. Choose refinement over ornamentation: "Simplicity is the height of cultivation and partial cultivation runs to ornamentation…by hacking away the unessential so that the truth will be revealed unobstructed–artlessness."
About Teri Tom, MS RD
Teri Tom is one of the world's foremost Jeet Kune Do instructors. Her Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do lineage traces directly to Bruce Lee via Ted Wong, Lee's close friend, preferred sparring partner, and most prominent student (more private sessions with Lee than any other individual). Tom herself clocked over 1,000 hours of private study with Sifu Wong. She has published two JKD books, The Straight Lead: The Core of Bruce Lee's Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do and Jeet Kune Do: The Arsenal of Self-Expression. She has also served on the board of the Bruce Lee Foundation and appeared on the cover of Black Belt Magazine and in the documentary I Am Bruce Lee.

What people are saying
Praise for The Straight Lead
Highly recommended! This book is an intelligent and fascinating examination of Bruce Lee's 'straight lead' punch. Teri Tom does an incredible job documenting the painstaking process Bruce Lee went through to develop the punch and clearly explains the principles behind it. Anyone interested in JKD will benefit from this book--even if you are not interested in Jeet Kune Do, the techniques and principles laid out will help you look at every strike you throw in a different, more scientific, and practical way."
Creator of the YouTube channel The Modern Martial Artist, author of Footwork Wins Fights and Aggressive Defense
What impressed me most was the depth of research and the respect shown for Bruce Lee's original teachings. Tom doesn't simply explain how to execute the straight lead. She explores its historical influences, its biomechanics, the principles behind its efficiency, and why it became the centerpiece of Lee's approach to combat. The inclusion of insights passed down through Ted Wong, one of Bruce Lee's closest private students, adds a level of authenticity that is difficult to find elsewhere."
Author of Disciples of the Dragon
"I regard Teri Tom as perhaps the most articulate and scientific JKD instructor out there."
Executive Editor of Black Belt Magazine
By grounding her analysis in both technical breakdown and scientific principles of the punch, Teri has produced an essential reference for anyone seriously studying Jeet Kune Do. For those of us fortunate enough to have trained with Ted Wong, this book feels like one more lesson from our beloved sifu. I know this work gave him great satisfaction, as it captures and organizes decades of insight he developed after Bruce Lee’s passing, refining his understanding of the technique he was entrusted to preserve. That knowledge is now carefully documented here for future generations."
